Rye Harbour
13th April 2012, FridayHighlights today have included at least 35 Avocet spread over Harbour Farm pools, Flat Beach and the new saltmarsh area, Flat Beach attracted 10 Bar-tailed Godwit, 90 Golden Plover, 85 Oystercatcher, 6 Ruff and 2 Wheatear near the Wader Pool. At Ternery Pool at least 100 Sandwich Tern were roosting on the islands out from Crittall Hide, Mediterranean Gull numbers have been very low in recent days with only 35 birds present mid morning and an adult Little Gull on the pits near the barns. Common Terns were around in small numbers preferring to roost on the islands viewed from the Denny Hide. On Harbour Farm a few Yellow Wagtails and several Swallows overhead were of note. At Castle Water 6 Little Ringed Plover were on the new excavations and 4 Wheatear were in the nearby fields. From the viewpoint the male Marsh Harrier gave great views and looked splendid in the morning sunshine, warblers in song included Reed, Sedge, Willow, Whitethroat, Chiffchaff, Blackcap and of course Cetti’s. Also from here at day break a croaky booming Bittern, Water Rail and several Bearded Tit.
