Beach Reserve

In recent years the wintering Merlins that have frequented shore ridges and the beach reserve have given close views and provided some great arial chases, waders feeding along the shore have been one of the food sources the Merlins have utilised. This morning I watched one fly low at high speed into a group of Dunlins that were feeding at the low water mark, one Dunlin was singled out and after a short bid to escape was captured.  Although a spectacular thing too see there is a downside, repeated attacks from these small falcons could be pushing the smaller waders away from the shore into other feeding areas. I know things change every year, but groups of Dunlin and Sanderling have been a bit thin on the ground this winter on our stretch of shore.
