It’s been a little quiet here for the past week or so with many of our winter visitors departing and spring migrants yet to arrive. However, there are still a dozen or so goldeneyes and smew around the site, bitterns are still being spotted on most days and there have been occasional sightings of merlin, redwing, fieldfare, chiffchaff, firecrest and raven.
Highlights over the past few days have included 250 Curlew roosting on Harbour Farm, at Ternery Pool 8 Avocet, Spotted Redshank and at least 25 Mediterranean Gulls. Knot numbers have crept up to 85 feeding along the shore. At Castle Water 32 Little Egret have roosted at the traditional site out from the viewpoint (instead of main pit), 4 Marsh Harrier, Barn Owl, 4 Bearded Tit, Firecrest and a Bittern have also given great views from there. A small group of around 30 Fieldfare are still roosting around the main pit, these sometimes appear around Harbour Farm/Narrow Pit.
