A nice winters day at Pett

Sunday 7th November 2010, I left the van and walked along the sea wall, for a change where the first bird of note were 2 Ravens flying along the sea wall, the tide was just on the turn and would be high tide around 11.30 am, by the time I got to the pools, I had seen a nice view of a duck R.B.Mergangser flying east along the brake water of the tide. Also hundreds of Starlings coming in off the sea, in flocks of 50 to 100’s which went on for most of the morning, heading north or north west. Waders were in good supply as well with Grey Plover,Curlew,Turnstone,Oystercatcher which were on the beach. There was also 1Ruff, 15Redshank and 120 Curlew which were at the pools at high tide. Wigeon 12o, Shoveler 30, Gadwall 15 but very few Teal. The bay was more lively as well with 3/4 Goldeneye , 15 Common Scoter on the sea, with around 50 Brent Geese, and 4 Knot,10 Dunlin all heading east. Through the course of the morning a Merlin was seen twice hunting, and never caught any of the prey it went after, also 2 Marsh Harriers ( 1 adult male, 1 imm cream head), 2 Buzzard, 2 Kestrel. And the last birds of note was 2 Swallows at the pools. But to round a good morning off was a Common Seal swimming along tide line. Pete
