What a Stunner!

6th July 2010, Tuesday

I ran the moth trap at Lime Kiln last night, and after emptying it I had a mooch round for stragglers, coming across this lovely beastie in the process. It is a Swallow-tailed moth (Ourapteryx sambucaria) one of the largest of the British geometer moths (those with ‘looper’ caterpillars), and probably the largest non-hawk moth I see here (this individual was about 6cm across).
