Separating female newts
Newcomers to field herpetology often struggle to tell the females of smooth and palmate newts apart. One of the key features to use is that palmate newts have a pink unpotted throat, and smooth newts a cream throat, marked with dark speckles. The trouble is that sometimes you find confusing specimens, smooth newts with no dark markings, or more unusually, palmate newts with dark speckling on the throat.
