Nesting Seabirds

At Dungeness and Rye Harbour there are very high water levels that have reduced the number of islands for nesting seabirds. At Rye Harbour the gulls and terns are squeezing in to the few that remain above the water.

Rye Harbour

Highlights over the past few days have included 31 Whimbrel, 3 Bar-tailed Godwit and 16 Common Tern on the Quarry. Harbour Farm Pools have attracted 24 Avocet and 4 Little Ringed Plover, Shelduck  numbers remain high on Flat Beach with at least 39 yesterday, 96 Golden Plover were also roosting there. Offshore an Arctic Skua was chasing Sandwich Terns and a small flock of Common Scoter (100) has been present. Highlights from the viewpoint at Castle Water  35 Swallow, 8 House Martin, 12 Sand Martin, 60+ Yellow Wagtail warblers have included Sedge, Reed, Whitethroat and Cetti’s.
