Highlights from the hide at Castle Water this morning included 4 Bittern, 2 Smew (redhead), 5 drake Pintail, 20 Snipe, 150 Fieldfare in flight and 3 Marsh Harrier.

News of an unwelcome fungus in RX land
In late spring 2008 I tested a second sample of amphibians in my garden and at Dungeness for signs of an emerging fungal disease, Chytridiomycosis. The first tests were reassuring with no signs of the disease in amphibians tested in the spring of last year. Later tests, undertaken in June, revealed that three smooth newts had the infection at Northiam.
