Close Encounter
8th January 2010, Friday… with the Bittern. After three unsuccessful attempts to get a close view of this sometimes invisible bird, I had much better success this morning at the Castle Water hide.
After an hour of watching a pair of Smew from the hide, one Bittern landed on the ice in front, which prompted a second to walk out of the tiny clump of reeds.
Then it was almost embarrassed as it walked to another patch of reed…
.. after it showed how long its neck really is!
