Shingle recycling

At Rye Harbour Nature Reserve the moving of shingle from the river mouth to Pett Level is just about to start for the winter. This is vital work carried out by the Environment Agency to maintain a good sea defence. This means that there will be several lorries using the private road during week days. If you are using the road please keep a look out and get right off the road to let the lorries pass. Thank-you.

Rye Harbour

Avian highlights over the past few days at Castle Water have included Marsh Harrier, Hobby, Spotted Flycatcher, 15+ Bearded Tit and 60 House Martin. Yesterday a good selection of insects was found in the grassland and scrub around the viewpoint 2 Clouded Yellow, Brown Argus, Peacock, Mottled and Field Grasshopper, Long-winged Conehead, Brown and Migrant Hawker and a queen Bombus lapidarius. On the Beach Reserve the small trickle of Swallows, Sand Martins and Meadow Pipits over Shore Ridges at first light has been the most notable thing recently.

The different colour forms of Mottled Grasshopper provide them with excellent camouflage. Read the rest of this entry »
