RSPB Dungeness recent sightings

A bittern was seen from the ramp at Hooker’s pits on 12th. The great white egret was last seen on Sunday. Two garganey, a hobby and a spotted flycatcher were also seen on Sunday and a redstart was seen near the return trail yesterday. An osprey passed over early this morning and the spotted crake is still at the Hanson-ARC site.

Rye Harbour

Highlights at Castle Water in recent days have included 2 Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff, Little Ringed Plover, Greenshank and 2 Green Sandpiper, wildfowl numbers are gradually increasing on the two pits with 250 Mallard, 60 Gadwall, 52 Teal, 43 Shoveler, 28 Wigeon and 3 Pintail. Insect highlights have included 2 male Southern Hawker, this species has only been recorded a few times on the reserve, Brown Hawker, Emerald Damsefly and Clouded Yellow. On the Beach Reserve 100 Golden Plover, 6 Wheater, 50 Meadow Pipit, 10 Grey Partridge, 7 Snipe and an Actic Skua have been the pick of the bunch.
