Pett Level

22nd August 2009, Saturday

Pretty much the same species over the last few days as previously i.e Willow Warblers, Common and Lesser Whitethroats in the bushes around Toot Rock and Avocet, Black-tailed Godwit, Dunlin, Greenshank, Spotted Redshank, Ringed and Little Ringed Plover, Green and Common Sandpiper at the Pools. Today, 3 LRPs, masquerading as Turnstones, landed beside us on the shingle at high tide.

As the water shrinks at the Pools, up to 13 Grey Herons have been busy and the many dabbling ducks keep their heads almost permanently under water.

Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Hobby, Peregrine, Marsh Harrier and Buzzard have been seen on most days, with 4 of the latter today. 2 Ravens were present on Thursday.

The most surprising species recently was a Corn Bunting, also on Thursday, which flew W along the sea wall before heading inland towards Carters Farm. Once upon a time, in the days before egrets, they used to nest on the level, but I now count myself lucky to see them more than once in a year.
