Castle water

The small ponds that have featured in previous posts during the early part of summer are still checked on occaisions for exuvia. Only a small trickle of Common Darter are still emerging but a nice find this morning was a female Emperor at stage four of emergence still clinging to the exuvia. This species usually emerges during the night with the maiden flight at dawn. Avian highlights included 3 Green Sandpiper, 7 Little Ringed Plover, 350 Lapwing and 30 Redshank on the new excavations, from the viewpoint two immature Marsh Harriers gave fantastic views.
