Shrimping at Pett Level
28th June 2009, Sunday
The net brings up all kinds of sealife other than shrimps: molluscs, crabs and flatfish as well as bits of plastic rubbish.

In sifting through the catch, you have to watch out for Lesser Weever Trachinus vipera, for its venomous dorsal spines cause painful stings. In this photos you can see how its eyes are placed on top of the head, enabling it to see while hidden in the sand.

Greater Pipefish Syngnathus acus, was one of the more distinctive fish, along with Armed Bullhead Agonus cataphractus (but I didn’t get a decent photo of that.)
