Rye Harbour Moths

14th June 2009, Sunday

An excellent morning, with 60 species in the Lime Kiln trap, despite the rain. The commonest species today were Heart & Dart and Dark Arches, while the highlights included Ethmia bipunctella, Shore Wainscot, Long-legged Tabby and Peach Blossom (below).

While emptying the trap this morning I noticed that the Buddleia in the Lime Kiln garden has a good crop of Mullein caterpillars (bottom) this year, the first time I have seen them on this species (though they occur regularly here on Great Mullein). This moth can exist as a larvae for several years before emerging.
