Rye Harbour Sightings

15th April 2009, Wednesday

The glorious weather today really seemed to bring out the insects, so I thought it would be a good time to carry out the weekly butterfly count. Mostly Peacocks and Small Tortiseshell today, though Speckled Wood, Small Copper and male Orange Tip were also seen and new for the year (for me at least). There were also plenty of Dotted Bee-fly (below, female on the left), continuing their good year, and a couple of immature Marpissa muscosa (click here) at Castle Water Hide, a new spot for this uncommon jumping spider.

The transect also found a good selection of birds, with the highlights being a pair of Garganey, a pair of Marsh Harrier and a Black-tailed Godwit from Castle Water Hide and at least one Bearded Tit from the viewpoint.
