RSPB Dungeness
Our first little ringed plover of the year was seen at Denge Marsh yesterday as were six avocets, eight black-tailed godwits, two scaup, two garganey and a merlin. Five more garganey (three males and two females) were on the ARC pit.
Bitterns on the move
Yesterday at dusk three Bittern took off from the various reed beds at Castle Water, after doing several circiuts of the new excavations, with the odd croak thrown in, gradually increased in height then headed south eastwards. This is the second time that I have seen this happen, the first was ten years ago on 13/03/99 when five birds took to the air, three from Castle Water and two from Narrow Pit. Other highlights from a walk around the reserve yesterday included 6 Chiffchaff in song, Black Redstart, Wheatear, 5 Cetti’s Warbler and 3 Marsh Harrier. Butterrflies on the included Small Tortrioseshell, Peacock and Red Admiral.
