RSPB Dungeness

The highlight on the reserve for the last couple of days has been the sighting of a couple of common cranes. They have been seen all around the reserve and have given some really good views. They were spotted again this morning so they are still around.
Also on the reserve the ARC hide has had plenty of waders present, including wood sandpiper, green sandpiper, spotted redshank, greenshank and black-tailed godwit. Other sightings include black-necked grebe, hobby, peregrine, kingfisher and sand martin.

A snail-killing fly

I photographed this rather attractive small fly on Saturday near Blackwall Bridge, Rother Valley. Patrick Roper has identified it as the snail-killing fly (Sciomyzidae) called Coremacera marginata.
