Dungeness Bird Observatory

There was a small but varied arrival of migrants on the land this morning with five Tree Pipits, 35 Yellow Wagtails, a Whinchat, three Sedge Warblers, a Garden Warbler, 30 Willow Warblers and a Spotted Flycatcher of note.

RSPB Dungeness

Sightings over the last couple of days have included common sandpiper, wood sandpiper, dunlin, snipe and greenshank. Besides the waders other sightings include garganey, hobby and regular sightings around the reserve of the marsh harriers.

Viewpoint at dawn

Mid August is the peak time for Little Egrets roosting at Castle Water, but a count of 74 leaving the roost at dawn was still a nice surprise. The highest count to date is 79 from August 2006. Other birds leaving the pits after roosting overnight included 54 Greylag and 350 Mallard. Also seen from the viewpoint this morning Hobby, Barn Owl, Bearded Tit, 10 Snipe, 2 Green Sandpiper and Willow Warbler.
