Rye Harbour Insects
15th June 2008, SundayThe weekly butterfly/dragonfly count had to be aborted today due to decreasing temperature, but one or two interesting species still turned up. Two Downy Emerald males were still present on the northernmost of the two small pools to the north of Castle Pit, patrolling the pool edges and taking turns to pursue each other, while the local hoverfly Helophilus trivittatus (below) was sunning iteslf on nearby bushes. The most unexpected sighting however was a Brimstone butterfly by the track to the north of the Barn Field, the first time I have ever had this species on the butterfly transect!
