Rye Harbour Moths

8th June 2008, Sunday

The best morning yet in the Lime Kiln Moth Trap, with 120 individuals of 43 species. Rarities included White Colon, Water Ermine (new for the year) and Viper’s Bugloss Moth, while other new ‘faces’ included Elephant Hawk Moth, Burnished Brass, Dark Arches and, something of a surprise, Lobster Moth (below). There have been a few records of the latter species from Winchelsea Beach since trapping began locally, but this is the first record from the reserve proper. The name comes not from the adult, but from the caterpillar which has a strange, almost crustacean like appearance!
