If you go down to the Parkes Hide at Ternery Pool and open the flaps, there in front of you will be an island with over a hundred Black-headed Gulls nests. The nests range from adults still incubating to nests with half grown chicks, but most have chicks that are just a few days old - as in the photo above.
The sequence of pictures below taken this morning at Castle Water, show a male Four-spotted Chaser in the first stages of emergence. Six other individuals were also going through the same process nearby and 21 exuvia were found amongst the emergent vegetation. Ten Hairy Hawker exuvia were also found.
At last, a catch of over a hundred moths with forty species represented. New moths for the year included Mullein Wave, Silver-ground Carpet, Clouded Border Brindle, Cinnabar and Obscure Wainscot. The commonest two species being Flame Shoulder and Nettle Tortrix.
