“Blue” damselflies and other insects

7th May 2008, Wednesday

Today around ponds on the northern edge of Rye, I saw single Blue-tailed and male Azure Damselflies among the many Large Red Damselflies on the wing. Last year my first dates were 25th and 30th April respectively.  With continuing warm weather, it’s worth looking out for Banded Demoiselle, Red-eyed Damselfly and Broad-bodied Chaser. Butterflies today included 3 Holly Blues and 3 Green-veined Whites, and my wife saw a Small Copper by Camber golf course. Lastly, a Great Silver Beetle (Hydrophilus piceus) was attracted overnight to my moth trap in Rye.
