Phil Newton just called from Doleham to say that a huge bird of prey had just circled over his house before flying on towards Hastings. A Buzzard was soaring nearby and was very much smaller!
I heard at least a month ago of an escaped Golden Eagle at Boreham Street, but there seem to have been no further reports of that one.
On a freezing morning most of the duck were keeping to the edge of the reeds. There were still 240 Wigeon present but no other counts of note. Three Avocet flew between the lakes but with little mud available they ended up swimming on the eastern pool. A male Marsh Harrier patrolled the reedbeds and a single Reed Bunting was in song.
