Rye Harbour Moths

At last, a decent night in the Lime Kiln Cottage moth trap, with over 70 species present. The commonest species was Shuttle-shaped Dart (19), closely follwed by Viper’s Bugloss Moth (17) and Lime-Speck Pug, Light Brown Apple Moth and Synaphe punctalis (nine each). Highlight was Tree-lichen Beauty (below), a rare immigrant recorded only a couple of times previously on the reserve, while newcomers for the year included Pale Prominent and Nutmeg.

Still Emerging

Common Darter are also still emerging from the same pool mentioned in the post below, 9 shed larval skins, 3 freshly emerged and one in the final stages of emerging (pictured) were found this morning.

Mass Emergence

Just a follow up to the post 30th july 2007 Migrant Hawker. In a patch of emergent vegetation measuring 3 x 7 metres in a small shingle pool on Harbour Farm (pictured), 71 Migrant Hawker have emerged over the past two nights. Below is a picture of the collected shed larval skins.
