Bombus hypnorum
8th July 2007, SundayWhile carrying out a bumblebee survey on the reserve yesterday, Brian Banks found this Bombus hypnorum queen feeding on Viper’s Bugloss near Lime Kiln Cottage. This species is a recent addition to the British list, first being recorded from Wiltshire in 2001, and this is the first record for the reserve. It can be told from the other British species by the possesion of a brown thorax and a black abdomen with a white ‘tail’ a combination of features not found in any other British bumblebee.
