High winds + old trees
20th January 2007, Saturday
The gales on Thursday brought down several large trees in Winchelsea where Greyfriars’ Meadow was particularly affected. An Ash, forming part of a former entrance avenue, came down a few weeks ago, but was joined by one of its companions and among others was a Walnut opposite the house itself.
Most of the trees on this relic of Victorian parkland are not exceptionally old, but some are not in the best of health. The exposed position and unusual wetness of the soil may have jeopardised them, but the roots could be quite shallow too, thanks to the mediaeval streets which slumber just beneath the turf.
