News from RSPB Dungeness

Today’s highlight was six buzzards circling over Boulderwall Farm. Denge marsh hide provided good views of pintail, little stint, snipe and curlew whilst eleven black-tailed godwit and a greenshank were showing well from the visitor centre. A spotted flycatcher was seen past Firth hide.

Winchelsea Beach/Rye Habour NR

A thorough search of the scrub at the western end of Rye Harbour NR and around Winchelsea Beach was rewarded with a single Firecrest performing well in a small clump of bushes. Other migrants were in good numbers with the majority being seen in the line of scrub behind The Ridge, Winchelsea Beach, including 1 Turtle Dove, 9 Lesser Whitethroat, 18 Whitethroat, 15 Blackcap, 14 Chiffchaff and 11 Reed Warbler. Yellow Wagtail still abound on the beach reserve with 50 counted on a short stretch.

Rye Harbour Moths

Highlights in the Lime Kiln cottage light trap this morning were Delicate (below), the second Vestal of the year and six Scarce Bordered Straw, while other migrants included Rush Veneer, Silver Y, Dark Sword-grass and White-point. Also the first record this year for the uncommon resident Feathered Brindle (bottom)
