Rye Harbour Moths

An excellent morning for the Lime Kiln Cottage moth trap today, the highlight being the first reserve record of Striped Hawk-moth (below). This immigrant is resident around the Mediterranean and in North Africa and turns up in Britain in small numbers most years. Also of interest was the second reserve record of Cosmopolitan, another even scarcer migrant, first recorded at Rye Harbour in 1999. Other migrant species included Vestal (bottom), Gem, Bordered Straw, Scarce Bordered Straw, Evergestis extimalis, masses of Rush Veneer and a Dark Sword-grass, while a singleton of the rare resident micro Cynaeda dentalis was also present.
