Beach Reserve and Viewpoint

The recent sequence of high tides have rejuvenated Flat Beach and Flat Beach Quarry, a good selection of waders were found this morning: 2 Wood Sandpiper, 5 Green Sandpiper, 4 Common Sandpiper, Spotted Redshank, 3 Greenshank, 12 Redshank, Grey, Golden and Ringed Plover, Whimbrel, Curlew, Dunlin and Turnstone. An additional Wood Sandpiper was still giving views from Parkes Hide. Wheatear and Yellow Wagtail were also present in good numbers on the Beach Reserve this morning, which is attracting the attention of Hobby, SparrowHawk and Kestrel (which all look well fed). At the Viewpiont, the first group of ten Little Egrets left the roost at 5.20am, the total this morning being 72.

Pett wetlands

This week’s rain has revived the pastures and returned a shallow covering of water to the flood and scrape, where there have been up to 11 Green Sandpipers, 2 Greenshank, 2 Ruff, 2 Common Sandpipers, 1 Wood Sandpiper and the odd Black-tailed Godwit.

The Avocets seem to have left, but high overhead Swifts are still present, hunted in heart-stopping fashion by Hobbies.

Away from attractions of the Pannel Valley, warblers are few, but a wandering juv Nuthatch at Carter’s Farm was typical of the season.
