Rye Harbour Nature Reserve

The weekly butterfly/dragonfly count at Castle Water continues to turn up interesting insects. The Lesser Emperor was still present on the reserve today, this time patrolling the northern end of the pit during the afternoon, while several ovipositing Small Red-eyed Damselfly were also found (below), the first confirmed breeding on the reserve for this recent colonist. The most surprising sighting however was a very worn Silver-washed Fritillary basking on bushes near the door of Castle Water hide, only the second reserve record for this species and the first since 1990!

Speckled Wood

The Speckled Wood flies in partially shaded woodland with dappled sunlight, it can also be found along lanes, tracks and tall hedgerows were it seems to prefer damp areas. Not very common on the Reserve but can be found at a few locations.

Migrant Hawker

Migrant Hawkers  are begining to emerge around the Reserve now, the flight season lasts from late July to well into the autumn. In the 1940s this species was an uncommon migrant from southern Europe, it has extended its range in Britain from a pioneering breeding population in the south-east, were it it is now common. The resident population is boosted each summer with regular migrations from the continent. Immature female pictured.
