Rye Harbour Moths

Another good night for the Lime Kiln moth trap, with over 70 species and several hundred individuals. Rarities included Pigmy Footman, Kent Black Arches, Oblique Striped and Shore Wainscot (below). The highlight however was the micro moth Platytes alpinella (bottom), a sandhill and shingle specialist whose larvae feed on mosses.

Lesser Emperor Dragonfly

The Lesser Emperor Dragonfly can still be found at the northern end of Castle Water, it gave excellent views hawking insects and could be viewed from the footpath. This species occurs throughout southern Europe but is seldom abundant. The first record for this species in Britain was in 1996.
