Sandwich Tern chicks

The 500+ pairs of Sandwich Tern nesting at Ternery Pool have been fairly successful, so that now there are hundreds of chicks able to fly, but not yet able to catch their own fish. So, right in front of the Crittall Hide there is a gang of young terns waiting to be fed. The noise is deafening.

Small or Esssex Skipper

These two butterflies can be difficult to identify in the field, even with close up pictures taken yesterday its hard to be sure. One of the features to look for is the colour of the underside of the club-shaped antennae, it should be black in Essex (bottom picture) and orange or brown in Small (top picture). Also the tip of the underside of the forewing in Small Skipper shows a olive/green colour. However misidentifications still occur.
