Hairy Hawker at Castle Water

The entry on the 23rd of May referred to a young female, the pictures below show an adult male, this obliging individual allowed close up shots. The compound eyes of adult dragonflies are the largest among insects, because the eyes surround the head dragonflies can see in front, to the side and behind all at the same time.

Five-spot Burnet

At Castle Water many Five-spot Burnet moths are now emerging. Along the footpath that leads from the viewpoint to the northern end is the best place to see them. The cocoons are easy to see attached to the tops of the tall grass.

Pett Level

The roadside pool was busy this morning, with young Tufted & Ruddy Ducks, a new young GC Grebe riding on its parent’s back, a f Pochard, Little Grebes chasing about and Ruddy Ducks in hurtling unaccustomed flight.

A blotchy f Marsh Harrier was hunting over the reeds, where Bearded Tits were pinging about. 2 Little Egrets were fishing in the Old Fleet.

Out on the marsh, 27 Curlews were all but hidden in the long grass. Yesterday morning, a pair of apprehensive Shelduck were loitering beside a shingly rabbit warren wheretheir ducklings were waiting to make a break for it.

A dozen Common Scoters were on the sea.
