Willow Ermine caterpillars

These caterpillars were feeding on Crack Willow at Castle Water yesterday. They are about 2cm long and are likely to be Willow Ermine Yponomeuta rorrella. My attention was drawn to them by the silken webs covering groups of leaves.

Local Naturalists

Breda and Ernie Burt were born and bred in Iden, near Rye. Breda a botanist and Ernie a practical man. They were very important to Rye Harbour Nature Reserve in so many ways and they are now remembered with a seat and plaque at the Castle Water hide.
