Nursery Web Spider

I came across this Nursery Web Spider (Pisaura mirabilis) at Lime Kiln Cottage this afternoon. Females of this species carry their egg sacs around with them, holding them in their jaws. Just before her eggs hatch, the female builds a dense web (the nursery web) in which the youngsters stay for several days. Another unusual aspect of this species is that during courtship, the male presents the female with prey wrapped in silk to reduce the chance of him being eaten during mating!
