1st June 2006, Thursday

Please drive carefully.

Today we received details of a Barn Owl chick ringed last year on the nature reserve. It was ringed on 9th June, but then found dead as a road casualty 264 days later (28th Feb) at Old Romney, Romney Marsh, Kent (11 Kms away). Hopefully, some of it’s four siblings have done better.

Beach Reserve, Rye Harbour

As we enter June there are increasing numbers of wader chicks on the Beach Reserve, and the family groups do not always stay in protected areas. Look out for distressed adult birds giving alarm calls or possibly pretending to be injured to lead danger away from the chicks. The picture below shows two Ringed Plover chicks pretending to be invisible by staying motionless, they can easily be trodden on by people and dogs. Visitors to the Reserve can help protect our breeding birds by keeping to the footpaths and taking notice of the DOGS ON LEADS signs were these are present.

The Lackey

This morning I found a few Lackey moth caterpillars in my garden. These would have overwintered as an egg, and hatched out in april, growing rapidly. These individuals appeared to be fully grown and were probably looking for safe sites to pupate.

Digiscoping

During the recent Wildlife Weekend, I attended the session on digiscoping at Rye Harbour - mainly to find out if my Optolyth telescope and Canon digital camera could work together - and was astounded by my very first results!  Thanks to Barry, I have avoided the need to invest in expensive and cumbersome adaptors, instead using a small piece of entomological material called plastozote, which is simply cut to size and rolled to form a short tube.  This acts as a spacer that fits snugly into the eyepiece of the telescope and centres the camera lens perfectly!
Redshank
A few adjustments to the camera settings and a steady hand were then all that was needed to capture this distant Redshank from the hide at the wader pool on a gloomy day.  At last I have entered the digiscoping age!
