Dungeness Bird Observatory

A Roseate Tern was feeding at the Patch and a trickle of birds flew east at sea including singles of Great Northern and Black-throated Diver and three Arctic Skuas. Very little change on the land with a Whinchat being the only significant migrant.

This reed dagger was…

This reed dagger was in my roof-top moth trap in West Hill Road, St Leonards this morning. It is most probably a migrant or a wanderer from the nearest confirmed breeding areas in Rye Bay and Dungeness.

The species is classified as nationally scarce (notable b) but most that turn up on the south coast away from confirmed breeding areas are classed as migrants. There is one other record for Hastings by Norman Hall at Hastings Country Park on 9th August 1997.
