Dungeness Bird Observatory

A better day with a decent movement of birds at sea and a handful of migrants on the land. Of note on the land were the first Blackcap and Willow Warbler of the spring along with a Peregrine Falcon, three Wheatears, eight Chiffchaffs and two Firecrests. Seawatching for 4.5 hours produced a Black-throated and 78 Red-throated Divers, 822 Brent Geese, seven Pintail, 16 Eider, 664 Common Scoter and 18 Red-breasted Mergansers. There was also an adult Mediterranean Gull at the Patch and seven Sandwich Terns feeding offshore.

Rye Harbour Sightings

At Ternery Pool 43 Mediterranean Gull and 52 Sandwich Tern were present this morning, on the main breeding island to the right of the Crittall Hide, while a Peregrine loitered briefly before heading off east. On the Beach Reserve, eight Wheatear were present, six of these at the south-eastern corner of Flat Beach, while a bird was again present on Harbour Farm. In addition, 3 Pintail were on the Quarry, while 32 Turnstone were feeding south of the red-roofed hut, showing little concern for the presence of people and allowing excellent views.
