RSPB Dungeness - recent highlights

22nd March 2006, Wednesday

The Slavonian grebe is still present on New Excavations, whilst smew and goosander continue to give good views from the Visitor Centre.  One or two bitterns are still being seen regularly from Scott hide.  Caspian and Mediterranean gulls were seen on the 18th and a yellow-legged gull was present on the 21st.  The first garganeys of the year were spotted on the ARC pit on the 18th and the following day produced other interesting sightings, including black-necked grebe, woodcock and black redstart.  Despite the continued dismal weather Spring cannot be far away and two wheatears seen at the end of the Dengemarsh Road on the 20th would seem to confirm this.
