Pannel Valley

Despite the rain, two Wheatears and 21 Whimbrel were seen early this morning, and there were two Common Sandpipers on the scrape this afternoon.

Today’s sightings

Four common terns, four greenshanks and 18 bar-tailed godwits were all seen from the Visitor Centre. Late in the afternoon good numbers of swallows, house martins and swifts were feeding over Burrowes pit.

Pett Level

On Sunday 24th April a Swift flew eastwards over the marshes at 10.45. There was also a purring Turtle Dove in the Pannel Valley.

Today’s sightings

Common scoter, bar-tailed and black-tailed godwits, whimbrel, common and Sandwich terns, cuckoo, swift and wheatear.

Rye Harbour Yesterday

On the Beach Reserve yesterday, good numbers of Sandwich and Common Tern were present, while there were also 10 Little Tern roosting on the Quarry during the late morning. Also on the Quarry at this time were three Bar-tailed Godwit , with small numbers of Whimbrel seen at various times during the day.

The area around the Narrow Pits turned up a good range of Warblers, including Cetti’s Warbler, Blackcap and the first Lesser Whitethroat, as well as providing good views of Cuckoo.

Today’s sightings

Highlights were: Slavonian grebe in summer plumage, fulmar, long-tailed duck, red-breasted merganser, knot, little ringed plover, Mediterranean gull, common tern, cuckoo, yellow wagtail and wheatear.

Dawn on the Beach Reserve

Good numbers of Gulls and Terns at Ternery Pool early this morning:
3000 + Black Headed Gull
600 Sandwich Tern
42 Common Tern
The Whimbrel roost on Flat Beach has started to pick up now,
61 Whimbrel and 4 Bar Tailed Godwit were counted leaving this morning. At least 30 Whimbrel were later seen feeding in fields at Castle Water.

Pannel Valley

An unwelcome visitor to the scrape today are two Bar-headed Geese. Other sightings include one Green Sandpiper and thirteen Whimbrel. Overnight there was an arrival of Lesser Whitethroat to the reserve.

Reserve Highlights Today

At Castle Water 2 Avocet,2 Little Ringed Plover,
1 Green Sandpiper and 3 Tree Sparrow.
Plus 29 Whimbrel feeding in nearby fields, and a Marsh Harrier over
Castle Farm.
Flat Beach Quarry and Ternery Pool attracted 240 Sandwich Tern,
33 Common Tern and 10 Little Tern.
Offshore 13 Scaup could be seen from the Sea Bank near Crittal Hide,
and I suspect these are the Birds from Castle Water.
